I bought one of these about 2 years ago for my first child and the quality was much better. The fabric was softer (think cotton vs. nylon), felt more padded, and it featured a soft, non-slip grip on the handle. The AIR version existed when I bought the first one, but I didn't see much difference between the two...

Now, 2 years later I purchased this exact model for baby #2 and was very disappointed. The fabric (while attractive looking) is not very soft, feels cheap, and there is no grip on the handle. To get these features now, you HAVE to buy the AIR version... which, if you shop around, you can find for only about $40 more. It's definitely worth the extra money IMO. My daughter was in her onboard35 until 14 months, and having a soft fabric that baby will want to sleep on, and a soft handle that makes the carrier comfortable to hold, was a must-have for me.

We really liked the design and the sturdy construction of the car seat, and Safety 1st was highly rated on all the sites we checked. The problem was that the seat was so long, we couldn't comfortably have it in the back seat and not eat the steering wheel of our Honda Accord. We even looked at other vehicles to put the car seats in (we have two kids, so we couldn't just use one side) and none fit but full size SUV's. We ended up getting a smaller Graco car seat that fit much better.

I was dead set on an AIR branded car seat for our infant daughter. I used the AIR seat for our toddler and after one of them kept her safe through a collision a couple years ago I have swore by them. My issue with the infant variant is they are not easy to clean and they are quite expensive for so few features. After reading review after review after review I ended up with an onBoard 35. Half the price, same seat as the AIR without the AIR feature on the sides, and easy to clean.

Honest reviews on Safety 1st onBoard 35 Infant Car Seat

The priority for me were: safety and price. This is a very good, simple model that received a very good safety score from the Consumer Report.

Word of advice: get an insert(snuzzler) if you are planning to use it for a newborn. The insert that comes with it will not hold his head.

Our son was 20 pounds and 28 inches at 4 months--we had to upgrade from his first infant seat. This seat, which gets outstanding reviews from Consumer Reports, is perfect. He fits comfortably, and adjusting the straps is a breeze--just press a lever at the base, between his feet, then tug a central strap or loosen the shoulder straps. The seat is also lighter than the previous one we had, which is very helpful lugging the seat and baby from place to place. Check out a stroller from Safety 1st and you have a complete travel system for less than $200. Save those bucks for the next big purchase!

Now at nine months, he's nearly 32 inches and we're sizing up again...wish we could keep this one.
